28 August 2002 – Wednesday – Bob Sugden
Laura and Bob got up at 5:30 am so we could do our morning walk.  Breakfast was at 7:30.  Some of the group went to see the town of Naryn and others went to the yurt at our hotel to purchase gifts etc.  Meli bought a felt rug for her new house.  Libby purchased a yurt to allow any guests to her home to experience the delights of staying in a yurt.  The yurt was about 24” high and about 5 sq. ft.  when assembled, enough to put your head and shoulders inside.

This morning at 6:30 we needed a light coat for our walk; temperature was about 13degrees C.  At 10:30 the temp. is about 25 degrees C and going up.  In Naryn, on our walk the only commerce were small stands putting out food and drink for sale.  Visited a small park with statue of a male that was born in about 1888 and died in 1930. He had a handlebar moustache.

10:30 Stopped to take pictures of cemetery.  Meli is showing designs of her  new house.

11:10 We left the mare’s milk stop and traveled down a small valley that reminded me of eastern Washington.  A lot of green grass and a few pine trees with a small stream meandering down the valley.  The road reminds me of the original Blewett Pass Highway.

11:30  Stopped at top of Dolon Pass of 3031 meters.  The highest point on the Naryn-Issyk Kul Road.  We gave all of our empty water bottles to a local child about 10 years old.

12:15 We are following the path of the “Chu” River, 2nd largest river in Kyrgyzstan.  The river flows north and makes a border with Kazakhstan.

12:20  Arrived at a plateau that is lush with grass, trees and small farms.  The area is surrounded with hills and mountains completely void of vegetation.  What a contrast.  Very picturesque and stark at the same time.

1:00pm  We stopped to tour community based Craft Center in Kochkorka.

1:50 Continued our journey with many new treasures and a little less cash.

2:15 Passed artificial lake used for hydroelectric production and water storage.

2:10 pm  We left Naryn region and entered Issyk-Kul region.

2:40 Stopped for lunch in Balykchy.  Wendy purchased wine for lunch “17%” alcohol.

3:50 Resumed trip for “Aurora” Tourist Resort.   The Resort is on Issyk-Kul Lake.  As we arrived at the resort area we passed through a tunnel of trees.  The trees were planted on each side of the road and leaned toward the opposite side of the road.  This area along the lake looks like Sequim, Washington on the north shore of Olympic Peninsula.  We arrived at resort and were overcome by the fantastic gardens.  Most of our group took a swim in the Issyk-Kul Lake.  The water was warm once the initial shock wore off.

Dinner in the Dining Room was very good.  This resort is waiting to be discovered by the rest of the world.

10:00pm Went to Bed.
